7 nights in Yoga Ashram + Backwater Boat Trip.
Plus an optional 1 to 2 nights at Amma the Hugging Saint’s Ashram.

Welcome to the Sunrise Reset Retreat in beautiful Varkala, Kerala — more than a yoga retreat, it’s a slower way to experience India.

Spend seven days moving, exploring, resting and enjoying the beauty of Kerala, without having to organise everything yourself. Wake up with yoga, swim in the warm Arabian Sea, discover local culture, enjoy nourishing food and choose between surfing and traditional Ayurvedic treatments — while still having plenty of space to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.

This isn’t an intensive retreat with a packed schedule or pressure to participate in everything. There is structure when you want it and space when you need it. Have a massage, learn to surf, wander through Varkala, sit with a coconut overlooking the ocean or take some time completely for yourself. We take care of the details so you can enjoy the experience.

We will be staying at Paul’s and Karolina’s favourite yoga teacher’s peaceful yoga school, just moments from the famous Varkala Cliff and Papanasam Beach. The retreat space has three beautiful yoga shalas, high-quality yoga equipment and freshly prepared sattvic vegetarian food. Our simple daily food rhythm includes fresh fruit after morning practice, followed by a nourishing brunch and early dinner. If you prefer to eat more frequently, Varkala is also full of colourful cafés and restaurants serving everything from Ayurvedic dishes and fresh seafood to international food.

Yoga sits at the heart of the journey without taking over your holiday. Classes blend vinyasa, hatha, yin, breathwork and meditation, with different options for different bodies and levels of experience. Our days also include morning swims in the Arabian Sea and evening gong baths, while one special evening we will come together for a gentle cacao ceremony with meditation, reflection and intention setting.

You can choose between surfing lessons, Ayurvedic treatments, or combine the two throughout the week — balancing adventure with deep rest. Beyond the retreat, we will experience some of what makes Kerala so special: colourful markets, the ancient Janardhana Swamy Temple, Varkala’s famous cliff and an unforgettable overnight journey through the palm-lined Kerala Backwaters.

The retreat is co-hosted by Paul and Karolina, bringing together experience, yoga, care and a genuine love for India. Paul has been teaching yoga and leading retreats around the world for 5 years, creating mixed-ability practices where there is no pressure to perform. Karolina is a yoga teacher and wellbeing facilitator who completed her 300-hour yoga teacher training here in Kerala and fell in love with its beaches, people, food and slower rhythm of life. She brings empathy, creativity and a reflective approach to the retreat, with a particular focus on making sure you feel comfortable, supported and free to experience the week in your own way.

Our groups are intentionally kept small, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere while still giving you space for yourself. Guests are typically aged between 35 and 65, and everyone from complete beginners to experienced yoga practitioners is welcome. You don’t need to be flexible or experienced — you just need to come as you are.

Itinerary

Yoga Retreat Varkala with Surf & Ayurveda
28th Nov – 5th Dec 2026

A Typical Day in Varkala

Our days follow a gentle rhythm, moving between yoga, ocean, nourishing food, activities and time to explore or rest.

This is an example of a typical day. Some days will look different depending on excursions and special activities, and there will always be space to listen to your own energy rather than feeling you need to participate in everything.

06:00 – Sunrise Yoga
Begin the day quietly with yoga as the sun rises over Kerala.

07:30 – Morning Swim
Our morning silence comes to an end as we head towards Papanasam Beach for a swim in the warm Arabian Sea.

08:30 – Fruit on the Beach
Fresh fruit by the ocean after our morning practice and swim.

09:00 – Surfing or Ayurveda
Choose between the playful energy of a surfing lesson or slowing down with a traditional Ayurvedic treatment.

11:30 – Brunch
Return for a nourishing vegetarian brunch and time together.

12:30 – Explore, Rest or Excursion
Depending on the day, we may head out to experience more of Kerala — or you will have time to rest, wander through Varkala, enjoy a massage, read, explore the cliff or simply do very little.

15:00 – Early Dinner
A freshly prepared vegetarian meal before the evening begins.

17:00 – Evening Practice
Slow down with yoga, Yin, restorative practice, meditation, Yoga Nidra or sound. One evening we will also come together for our cacao ceremony.

19:00 – Your Evening
Explore Varkala Cliff, enjoy the cafés and sunset atmosphere, spend time with the group or simply have a quiet evening to yourself.

21:00 – Night-time Tea
Come together for tea and a gentle close to the day.

22:00 – Silence & Rest
The retreat becomes quiet again, creating space to rest before another early morning by the sea.

There is structure, but no pressure to do everything.

Your retreat is also your time. If one day your body is asking for rest rather than another activity, we encourage you to listen to it.

Some days will naturally have a different rhythm as we explore temples, markets and the Kerala Backwaters — but the intention remains the same: space to move, explore, connect and slow down.

Yoga

Yoga Retreat Varkala with Surf & Ayurveda
28th Nov – 5th Dec 2026

Throughout our Yoga Retreat in Varkala, you will enjoy around two hours of yoga and meditation on each full retreat day. Paul and Karolina will share the teaching, bringing together their complementary approaches to yoga, meditation and wellbeing to create a varied, balanced and inspiring experience.

Morning practices will generally be more energising, helping you awaken the body and prepare for the day, while later practices invite you to slow down, release tension and move towards deeper rest.

Paul brings his dynamic and uplifting approach through Vinyasa, Hatha, pranayama and Himalayan kriyas, while Karolina brings a slower, more restorative dimension through Yin Yoga, restorative practices, meditation and Yoga Nidra.

Together, the programme creates a balance between movement and stillness, energy and rest — with enough variety to experience different sides of yoga throughout the week.

The intensity and style will vary, with no pressure to perform. Whether you are an experienced practitioner or relatively new to yoga, you will be encouraged to listen to your own body, respect your limits and choose the variation that feels right for you.

Yoga finishes on day seven before we travel to the Kerala backwaters.

Asana

The asana sequences are designed to bring benefits on both a physical and emotional level. Physically, they support better posture, deeper breathing, and healthy circulation. On an emotional and psychological level, these opening poses help release stored tension, reduce stress, and nurture a sense of openness and trust.

The intensity and style will vary, with no pressure to perform. Each practice is an invitation to respect your body’s limits and approach yourself with kindness. Cultivating self-compassion is the first step towards showing compassion to others.

Joyful Vinyasa Flow

A dynamic and uplifting practice that awakens the body, expands the heart, and boosts energy.

Mobilising Hatha Flow

Gentle yet powerful postures that open the body deeply, encouraging surrender and connection with vulnerability.

Meditative Yin Yoga

A slower practice that deepens the connection with your heart space. Through long, mindful holds you will learn to recognise and accept your limits, building compassion towards yourself.

Karolina will bring her own approach to Yin throughout the retreat, creating space to slow down, turn your attention inward and notice what is happening in the body without needing to change or achieve anything.

Restorative Yoga

Some practices will invite you to do even less.

Karolina’s restorative sessions use supported postures, stillness and conscious breathing to create space for deep rest. Rather than stretching further or working harder, you will be encouraged to soften, receive and allow the body to settle.

These quieter practices complement the more dynamic sessions throughout the week and are especially beautiful after days spent swimming, surfing and exploring Kerala.

Yoga Nidra

Karolina will also guide Yoga Nidra, a deeply restful guided meditation traditionally practised lying comfortably in Savasana.

Sometimes described as “yogic sleep”, Yoga Nidra invites the physical body into stillness while awareness is gently guided inward. There is nothing to perform or achieve — simply lie down, listen and allow yourself to rest.

We may weave Yoga Nidra into one or more of our restorative practices during the retreat, depending on the rhythm and needs of the group.

Pranayama and Kriyas

You will be guided through a variety of pranayama and Himalayan kriya techniques that increase lung capacity and teach the body to breathe slowly and deeply. These practices bring many benefits, including higher oxygen levels, reduced cortisol and adrenaline, detoxification, better digestion and metabolism, improved sleep, and a calmer nervous system.

Daily Gong Bath

A special part of this Sunrise Reset Retreat is the daily gong bath experience with Paul’s enormous 110cm Tibetan gong. After the afternoon yoga session, you will be invited to lie down in Savasana and allow the deep vibrations of the gong to wash through the body and mind.

The vibrations can feel both grounding and expansive, helping to calm the mind, release tension and guide you into a deeply meditative state. Combined with the energy of Varkala and the rhythm of the ocean, these sessions create a beautiful opportunity to fully slow down at the end of the day.

Cacao Ceremony

One evening, Karolina will guide a special cacao ceremony — a gentle opportunity to come together as a group, slow down and create space for deeper connection and reflection.

We will share cacao together and move through a combination of breathwork, meditation and guided reflection, before opening the space for a sharing circle.

There is no expectation to share anything you would prefer to keep for yourself. The ceremony is an invitation to pause, listen inwardly and connect — both with your own experience and with the people sharing this journey with you.

It offers a quieter, more reflective moment within the retreat and another way to experience the balance between movement, adventure, rest and connection that runs throughout our week together.

Excursions

Yoga Retreat Varkala with Surf & Ayurveda
28th Nov – 5th Dec 2026

Luxury Backwater Boat Trip

Glide through the magical Kerala Backwaters on a luxury private boat journey through palm lined waterways, hidden villages and emerald rice fields. This special overnight excursion is designed as a peaceful reset within the retreat, combining the beauty of slow Indian travel with deep relaxation and connection. We will enjoy a traditional freshly prepared Kerala lunch on board while watching local life drift by from the water, before arriving at our beautiful riverside overnight stay on dry land. Expect sunset skies, tropical birds, coconut groves, candlelit dinner vibes and the calming rhythm of the backwaters. The following morning we wake slowly with breakfast beside the water before moving on home, or onto Amma’s Ashram, feeling refreshed, grounded and inspired.

Visit the ancient Janardhana Swamy Temple, one of the most spiritual and historically significant temples in Kerala. Tucked away in the heart of Varkala, this sacred space offers a peaceful atmosphere filled with devotion, tradition and timeless beauty. As the sun begins to set, the temple comes alive with evening ceremonies, candlelight, chanting and the deep resonance of sacred prayers. The energy can feel incredibly powerful and grounding, offering a rare glimpse into authentic Indian spiritual culture. Whether you come for reflection, photography, meditation or simple curiosity, this beautiful temple experience is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Morning Swimming at Papanasam Beach

Morning swims in the sea are a beautiful way to begin the day after yoga. Also known as Varkala Beach, this stunning coast is famous for its dramatic red cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea. The warm tropical water, fresh sea air and peaceful morning atmosphere create the perfect natural awakening for body and mind. Enjoy refreshing swims beneath the rising sun, relax on the golden sand or simply take in the breathtaking ocean views. These morning sea swims become a grounding and energising ritual that adds something truly special to your day.

Markets

The markets are part of daily life in Varkala and often we walk through them to the sea. The vibrant cliff markets of Varkala are full of colour, character and relaxed bohemian energy. Stretching along the dramatic red sea cliffs, the winding market pathways are lined with artisan boutiques, handmade jewellery, flowing clothing, tailors, spices, incense, crystals and beautiful local crafts. Between the shops you will find cosy cafés, fresh coconuts, smoothie bowls and breathtaking ocean views at every turn. Perfect for slow mindful wandering, gift shopping and soaking up the unique spirit that makes Varkala one of India’s most loved yoga destinations.

Amma’s Ashram

For those wishing to deepen their spiritual experience in India, there is the option to extend the retreat with a 1 or 2 night visit to the world famous Amritapuri Ashram, home of Amma, lovingly known as “The Hugging Saint”. Set beside the peaceful backwaters of Kerala, this unique ashram welcomes visitors from all over the world seeking meditation, devotion, community and spiritual connection. Experience daily chanting, meditation, simple yogic living and the beautiful atmosphere of one of India’s most well known spiritual centres.

The ashram has a deeply calming energy and offers a rare opportunity to experience authentic Indian spiritual culture in a safe and welcoming environment. Whether you spend your time in quiet reflection, joining ceremonies or simply absorbing the peaceful surroundings, this can be a truly memorable addition to your retreat journey.

Please note that Amma travels internationally throughout the year and may not be present at the ashram during our visit. However, the spiritual atmosphere, community and daily practices continue whether she is there or not. This excursion costs £110 extra and includes taxi there, accommodation, food and taxi back to Cochin airport.
